Challenge #14

In your own space, create a promo and/or rec list for someone new to a fandom. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it and include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

You've probably heard of Top Gun at this point. Yes, you - the generic you, the one reading this post right now. I'd be more surprised if it hasn't come up at this point, given the cultural footprint the movies hold, to the point that the first one was considered significant enough to be included in the Library of Congress' National Film Registry and the second one played in movie theaters for over six months in a time when that's practically unthinkable because people kept buying tickets. But maybe you haven't seen it. No shame in that. Maybe you know it's not for you. I can't speak to your tastes. Then again, maybe you're not sure. Maybe you need some enticement. Maybe you need to be told that it's more or less American live-action anime, down to having beach episodes. Maybe you need more than that.

Might I offer a homoerotic volleyball montage, voted "best movie scene" three years in a row by Suck magazine, a fact that made the director tremendously proud?

What about Val Kilmer snapping his teeth at Tom Cruise, a moment he confirmed was improvised?

How about one actor sneaking porn onto set and playing it during a scene, creating the conditions for someone to say "This gives me a hard on" and for someone else to respond "Don't tease me" and for that moment to be included in the final cut?

Were you aware that the first movie's aesthetic was largely inspired by Bruce Weber, noted gay photographer?

How about that for all its endorsement by the US military, it manages to be astonishingly gay by 1986 and contemporary standards, with Kilmer himself being the first Iceman/Maverick shipper?

Would it please you to know that between Top Gun Maverick and the Mission Impossible movies, combined with all the cumulative explosions from his movies, Tom Cruise qualifies as a Dekahelen?

Possibly you'd enjoy knowing that the sequel is a surprisingly somber meditation on aging, loss, regret, and reconciliation in addition to all the thrills of the practical stuntwork?

Or that together, both movies total just over four hours' runtime so it's not even a big commitment, and that all four of those hours are full of beautifully composed scenes and shots?

Maybe you've made up your mind a while ago. I'm cool with that. But if you haven't and you're willing to give it a shot, drop me a line and I can hook you up, no streaming services required.

Consider watching Drawfee, where they take your dumb ideas and make even dumber drawings! Drawfee is an art/comedy web show on YouTube that has been running for more than 10 years. It originated as part of the comedy website/channel CollegeHumor (which is now Dropout); Drawfee went independent when CollegeHumor downsized around 2020. The format is 4 artists each doing their own interpretation of a given challenge ("design a character with these characteristics", "create something using this limited color palette", "draw this prompt on a time limit", etc) and reacting to each other's art. New episodes are uploaded every Thursday.

Where To Start

The whole reason I made this post! I've been thinking about this for months, if not years. Any of these would be a fun intro if the episode content interests you!

If you want a quicker gauge on the vibes, you could watch a fan animation of one of their clips. This is actually how I got sucked in: through this clip where they distressed Brennan Lee Mulligan with the thought of a zoologically improbable snake woman (yuan ti) with boobs. I also recommend Julia tricks Nathan into creating an eldritch horror NOT CLICKBAIT.

Honorable mention: Four Artists Redraw the Same Classical Painting. The first episode I watched! Somewhat less accessible because there's a lot of references to their own previous art. I totally get if starting right off with the self-referential jokes is not for you, but it gave me a feeling of "ooh, I'll have what they're having!" I still really love Jacob's illustration of the four of them and their cats. And seeing Karina break down the visual composition of the painting was so cool.

Why I Like Them

Just 4 friends making art and having a laugh together! A lot of banter, absurd humor, and "yes and" bits. And they're very sincere and open about their art process. If they struggle with art block and delete all their initial attempts for a prompt, they make a point of showing or telling the audience this, to show that career artists struggle sometimes too. I really love episodes where they try out a different medium or illustration style. Sometimes you get to see one of them getting excited about a new rendering style in real time, and you can recognize the development of that style in later episodes. And the community vibes are very queer-friendly! (And fandom-friendly. One of the hosts is a regular fanfic-reader like the rest of us.)

Challenge #5

In your own space, create a list of at least three things you'd love to receive, a wishlist of sorts.

1) Comments on AO3! I also enjoy remixes and fanart based on stuff I've written -  https://archiveofourown.org/users/dancesontrains/works (note tags and warnings, some are archive-locked due to content).

2) Or if you have moneys, Steam wishlist with video games here - https://store.steampowered.com/wishlist/profiles/76561198204034817/ Mostly smaller ones.

3) This is more serious, but please don't buy Harry Potter branded anything. I don't personally care if you pirate the works or make fannish stuff, but JKR doesn't deserve another penny for her anti-trans activities. Save your money.

Also there are many trans people in the UK and elsewhere, please don't try to get some sort of verbal ~absolution for interacting with HP from any of us. It's annoying to say the least.

This time last year I was learning about how to recognise antisemitism, chatting with a friend, trying to find reasons for hope (even MORE important this year!), doing work stuff, and watching Traitors: Australia. I had another bad night, so I tried working some stuff out in my head while I dozed rather than trying to write anything this morning. Here are the extended summaries for each book in the Keys to the Kingdom series.
Book 1 - For Love and GloryKirana embraces a life of danger and adventure as she travels with Jerrick to claim his throne. She grew up training in survival skills, archery and hand-to-hand combat with her ‘brothers’. Her ‘aunt’ also taught her some simple healing skills, particularly around herbs. The village feels too confining to her spirit and she is quite disdainful of her ‘father’. When Jerrick reveals his ‘true’ heritage, she is more than willing to accompany him. As they leave the village under cover of night, Seemu appears and insists on joining them. They are cousins and childhood sweethearts, and there is no doubt in her mind when he asks her to accompany him to claim his kingdom. Once he is established as king, he will make her his queen. Her mind is so full of the joys to come that she is willing to endure any privations during the journey. Even when they meet other women, she explains away his gallantry as the natural attitude of a king. Seemu, on the other hand, grows more suspicious of Jerrick’s intentions and tries speaking to both of them but is dismissed by both. In the course of their journey, they join a caravan whose leader explains they have a series of pick-up points to reach; the travellers can earn food by providing them with security. Given their combined skills, this seems like a natural fit and they are all happy with the arrangement for the first few weeks. There are women in the group who are mostly the wives, and unpaid servants, of the men and are all a little in awe of Kirana. She has always been rather uncomfortable in the company of other women and is happy to keep away, but there comes a moment when she needs their help. It becomes apparent that they are really thieves. The men take longer than usual to ‘collect’ the goods and when they do appear they are running. When the party gets clear of the pick-up point, they explain there was some difficulty with the paperwork, which Jerrick and Kirana accept, but Seemu is suspicious. He brings his doubts to Jerrick and Kirana who are aghast at the very idea. Kirana insists on providing ‘extra’ security at the next pick-up and realises Seemu is correct. She presents her findings to the others. Jerrick sees remaining in their company as a necessary evil, but Kirana refuses to continue to help them. They are nearing the Temple, the final stop on the ‘merchants’’ route and the place they have been aiming for because Jerrick wants to consult the Oracle about the best approach to claiming his throne. He believes they have a better chance of reaching it with their current party who know the way. However, Kirana and Seemu refuse to be party to further theft, or to accept food that has not been honestly earned. They have a row about it, and about his reluctance to marry her, and she storms off. Jerrick has assumed her dedication to him is unwavering and is shocked at her attitude. His answers to her challenges are ill thought through and stumbling as he tries to adjust to the new situation. The only thing he can clearly articulate is the sense, as he sees it, of staying with the group. Exasperated, Kirana leaves and is pleasantly surprised that Seemu joins her. He explains he only came in the first place to support her (he values his life too much to suggest he was protecting her!). Back home, she throws herself into becoming the new village healer, a role she is very reluctant to give up when Nova and MC appear bearing a letter from Jerrick. The journey back is harder, so feels longer, because they are on foot and are finding their own way. However, they are able to find honest work, in some cases putting right the harm caused by their previous companions. Kirana joins her ‘aunt’s’ successor as apprentice and finds an unexpected talent for the work. One day she is treating her ‘mother’ for a fever who, in her delirium reveals the truth.
Next is...
Book 2 - The Seer's EscapeNova leaves behind the confining life of the Temple to share her gift with the world. The Temple has been her whole world for as long as she can remember and leaving it is both thrilling and terrifying. Within its walls she is a small but important cog but who will she be outside? She is a blind ‘Seer’ from a nomadic culture. Like all blind girls born to her people, she was given to the Temple as a small child. The Temple is the only fixed structure they use and has grown into a complex of buildings. Each clan stops at the complex occasionally to water at the oasis, buy and sell goods, and worship at the Temple. There is also a gathering of the clans every five years. Nova is also a ‘niner’ so has extra abilities, and has always been something of an outsider. Jerrick visits her to hear his fortune. He has heard of the Temple Oracle as a fireside tale since he was very young. Arriving at its doors feels like entering a myth. He is still smarting from his argument with Kirana, and from being used by the thieves, so brings an energy of hurt to the consultation. Nova is the Oracle on duty that day. She is feeling confined by her life after a visit from her family. The smell of the desert hung about them, making her long for something other than the Temple. She tells him he will gain what he seeks but he is not who he thinks he is. The words come from outside her, as they always do, but there is an added poignancy to the message she cannot identify. Jerrick leaves the chamber deep in thought, leaving Nova reeling from the experience. Everything in her screams, ‘Leave!’ but leaving the Temple is almost unheard of for an Oracle. Intrigued by the clarity, yet contradiction, of the prophecy she decides to accompany him, offering to guide him through the desert that is her home. First, she meets with the Mother of the Temple, seeking her wisdom. The Mother can sense the pent-up excitement in Nova but is reluctant to send her out into the world with a stranger. As she prays to the Goddess, she is visited by Murdo who is her kinsman. He is travelling with Nova’s clan as he felt a call to the Temple. The Mother brings the three together (there is an inevitable scramble and tension as they almost miss each other!). The journey teaches him patience and humility, and the importance of hospitality. Jerrick is impatient and greedy for all the things he believes belong to him. The desert is a place that will not be rushed. It is only possible to travel so far in a day due to the strength of the animals that carry them (lamecs again?). When they meet with clans there is a long ritual of hospitality to be observed that drives him almost mad at first, even whilst he is grateful for a place to sleep out of the wind and sand. Over time, he comes to value the enforced calm and gentleness of the desert people. At the other side of the desert, they part company because she has to return to the Temple, but hands him to MC who is trying to find a way home. Nova feels she is being called back to the Temple, so she and Murdo prepare to return almost as soon as they arrive at the other oasis. At the same time, she is reluctant to leave Jerrick because they promised to guide him. They meet MC in the bazaar (Nova grabs her wrist as they pass each other in the crowd, startling them both) and she explains her predicament. The answer lies in Jerrick’s kingdom. There are people there with ancient knowledge and books filled with even more. Nova and Jerrick feel sure the answer can be found there. MC and Captain (Emsy and Captin) provide Jerrick with protection as they join a merchant caravan heading for the kingdom. Then we have...
Book 3 - The World Behind the WallMC discovers a magical world behind a blank wall in the house she is living in. Alone in a large empty house, she explores all its nooks and crannies, finding secret rooms, concealed passages, and even a small treasure trove. She documents everything and informs the house’s owners who allow her to keep the jewels (is it too obvious if one of them is the ring proving Kirana’s birthright?). During her explorations, she finds a door that appears to open onto a blank wall. When she leans on it, however, her hand passes right through. She steps through and finds herself in another world. After living alone for her whole adult life, she fell in love with Jim, a man she met on holiday. Whilst she had had lovers, she had never met anyone with whom she felt so completely at ease. He laughed at the right jokes in the right way. They shared a taste for fantasy fiction with a lot of overlap in the books they had read but also had plenty of new books to share. After their holiday, an organised trip for single people that someone else had booked for MC, they met again and realised they had found ‘the one’. They married a few months later and both took early retirement, planning to visit all the most exotic places they could think of. Both had good pensions and were drifting in their careers. Retirement gave them both a chance to reset their lives by allowing them to take on new challenges – he wanted to devote more time to [hobby], she wanted to try her hand at editing. They lived in his house at first but soon sold it and downsized to a three-bedroom bungalow, which they rented. A year later, he was diagnosed with terminal cancer. At first, they were both devastated, feeling all their dreams of a future together were destroyed. However, Jim’s natural optimism and good humour won through, and he showed MC there was still a lot for them to share. They ticked off some of the places on their list, but when he passed, she couldn’t face going to the rest alone. Naturally reluctant to do anything requiring effort, with Jim gone she lost all her energy. After barely leaving the house for a couple of months, however, she realised she needed to do something. She gave up her house and became a professional house-sitter. With each contract time-bound, it both freed her from having to make a decision about when to leave and forced her to find somewhere else to move to. There were no bills to pay or maintenance to worry about, but she had full use of the house and its facilities (where they existed). A year after Jim’s death, she has still not fully processed her grief, but it has lost its sharp edge. In an old mansion, ear-marked for renovation as a luxury retirement home, she finds her way into the other world. She took the job because she thought Jim would have loved the house. There are extensive grounds and she spends as much time roaming around them as she does inside. She enjoys finding the ‘rules’ to her secret world and is dreading having to leave. On the ‘other side’, the portal is much more obvious. She gets stuck there and hopes the wise people of Jerrick’s kingdom can help her get back. Captain, the cat that she shares the house with, gets gradually friendlier to the point where he begins to follow her everywhere. One day he follows her through the portal, and it disappears on the other side (or she gets stuck because she is wearing the ring…?). He is transformed into a young man. After panicking, they return to the city she has been exploring, where they meet Nova, Murdo and Jerrick. They can but only when the true heir, Kirana, accepts the crown. It soon becomes apparent that Jerrick is not the true heir and he begins to suspect the truth. MC is still at the palace, and he asks her to bring Kirana to the city. She and Captain agree to travel back to the village to find Kirana and bring her back.
And finally is...
Book 4 - Leaves on the WindThe three women travel together to restore the world. They are held together by their relationships with Jerrick, a young man who travelled to a distant kingdom to claim a throne only to discover it wasn’t really his. However, he has shown a talent as a ruler, and the city elders value his leadership, whilst constrained by tradition. They send MC and Captain to seek Kirana. They travel to the Temple to find Nova and Murdo, and the four of them make their way to Kirana’s village to make their case. After each has recounted her story, Kirana remains adamant that she doesn’t want to rule a kingdom and if Jerrick isn’t enjoying it that’s his problem. Despite her reluctance to take on her mother’s role as village healer, she has found she has a talent not only for the practical mixing of medicines but also the softer skills. She has a place in the world that fits her and has no desire for more. The others show her not only how the kingdom needs her but also the world. The kingdom exists on tradition that demands only the True Heir occupies the throne. Although Jerrick is an effective leader, there is still unrest and other claimants are dusting off their family trees. None of them will pass the Test of Blood but that won’t stop them forcing the kingdom into civil war to try. But there is another reason. MC’s ‘magic’ is draining their world of lifeforce and her presence is damaging the fabric of reality. The universe demands balance, which means MC and Captain returning to their own world, but there is a step that has to take place first – Kirana’s coronation. Reluctantly, Kirana admits that she has seen signs of this herself, with some herbs becoming almost impossible to find. They return to the kingdom where Kirana is crowned and appoints Jerrick as regent and MC is able to return to our world. Eventually, she agrees to be crowned but leaves again after making Jerrick her regent and heir. She will return every five years and, in the meantime, he can make his political marriage and prepare to be the True King. Nova and Murdo return to her clan as a couple. MC and Captain pass through the portal, which closes behind them forever.
On the way into the office I popped into TK Maxx to see if they had any coats or bags I could spend my bonus on. There were some coats that were the right length but were either too large, too small, or too cream. I was encouraged by the bags though. It's hard to judge from an internet picture whether something is the right size but the ones I looked at 'in the flesh' had the same dimensions and were big enough. At dinner time, I took another look at the leather one I've had my eye on but I think I'm talking myself out of it. One of the reviews said something about the zips not being great and I do think the fabric one I've been looking at has more robust-looking zips. I've got a year to spend the money, so there's no need to rush - but at the same time I don't want to get caught in a spiral of indecision! At least I know what controller I want :D I joined one of the external meetings and made some contributions that were accepted and some that weren't - but that's OK. The other people all know each other quite well, so I feel like the new kid. This afternoon I met with the colleague who's interested in PM. I gave a very brief overview of the PMF and added them to the PM Teams site I set up ages ago. As I was going through stuff I tried to open the project request form, which was closed - so later on I changed the dates and reopened it because I know another colleague is going to put in some requests. PM person has an idea for something that would have absolutely terrified me at their age - a series of podcasts, which will require them to talk to lots of people in the uni before they even get going. I was as encouraging as I could be and suggested some people for them to talk to - it might not be my idea of fun but they seemed really up for it. So, their 'project' is more an ongoing thing, but will still require planning and getting people lined up and so on. We put something in the diary for a follow-up and I said they could reach out to me at any time. I also made a start on the org chart Big Boss asked me to update but I'm not sure it's working very well. I might need to go back to the drawing board. When I got home we had a brief video call with Younger Grandson to wish him happy birthday. Where have 3 years gone? And it was a dull day, so the solar panels couldn't do their thing :( And now I'm heading for an early night.

Episode 1: Catarina living high off of having escaped her death flags.

*takes screenshot as receipt to laugh at Catarina*

Aw this is so lovely, and I love seeing three sets of girls enjoying a festival together. X'D

And then we get a really lovely Catarina/Maria scene! ❤️️❤️️❤️️

Bakarina is so baka that Mary and Keith literally go on right in front of her about their feelings for her and she just assumes Mary likes him even though she's engaged to Alan and turns it into this whole drama in her head which is way more boring than the truth.

Lmao Catarina accidentally told Nicol she loved him (and he to her). That receipt is needed ASAP. It's interesting because Catarina CAN indeed get flustered at romantic moments, but other times it goes completely over her head. Right now she's into the books where the MC reminds her of Nicol, so he has an effect on her especially. And she's always deredere with Maria.

Maria was just going to go home after school and live there but decided to join the Department of Magic instead so she could stay with Catarina :') "I want to stay by your side from now on, Lady Catarina."

It's nice that Catarina has friends outside of the man group too!

Catarina's blush when Suzanna asks to hug Catarina hah.

Okay, so I haven't finished playing this game yet, but I did play a huge chunk of it without posting any thoughts on it yet. I want to do my best to sum up all of those thoughts!

Routes I've played (spoilers only for route names):

  • Route 0 ✅ (completed entirely) - ⭐⭐⭐⭐ - Excellent introduction, I enjoyed the mystery of everything. I kind of want to replay it after 100%ing the rest of the game?
  • 2nd Scenario ✅ - ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - Very very good, the last battle got me good.
  • Reset ✅ - ⭐⭐⭐⭐ - Lots of fanfic potential here.
  • Goodbye Eito ✅ - ⭐⭐⭐⭐ - Very good.
  • Rebellion ✅ - ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - Possibly my favorite, definitely has my favorite ending.
  • Eva ✅ - ⭐⭐ - Had some interesting ideas that it didn't do much with
  • Multiple Eitos ✅ - ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - Excellent. So good.
  • Serial Battles ⭕ (unstarted) - I do want to 100% the game so I'll get to it eventually but I'm not super excited about the prospect lol
  • Conspiracy ✅ - ⭐ - Would be zero stars if I could find a way to communicate that in emoji. Awful.
  • Casual ⭕ - Looking forward to this route!
  • Box of Blessings ⭕ - I'm looking forward to more lore from this route, but suspect it won't be incredibly enjoyable.
  • Box of Calamity ✅ - ⭐⭐⭐ - It was decent at parts, tedious in others.
  • Cult of Takumi 🟨 (in progress) - Still pretty early in this one.
  • V'ehxness ✅ - ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - Loved the dimension that this gave to V'ehxness
  • Coming of Age ✅ - ⭐ - Hated it. It had a few good moments but mostly I hated the whole vibe of it all.
  • Retsnom ⭕ - Looking forward to it!
  • Steady Fundamental 🟨 - I'm mostly enjoying it, with some caveats.
  • Romance ⭕ - Probably the route I am looking the least forward to, even less than Serial Battles. I hope it has some decent moments, at least.
  • Slasher ✅ - ⭐⭐⭐ - I didn't hate it, and enjoyed some branches, but other branches just felt tedious.
  • Comedy ✅ - ⭐⭐⭐ - Some bits were funny, most were tedious, but it did give me all the free time I needed at least.
  • Killing Game ✅ - ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐- Another possible favorite, I loved the character writing.
  • Mystery ✅ - ⭐⭐⭐ - It was alright, I guess.

Characters (spoilers only for character names):
  • Takumi - ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - Excellent protagonist
  • Takemaru - ⭐⭐⭐ - He's fun, if underdeveloped as a character
  • Hiruko - ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - LOVE, she's so great
  • Darumi - ⭐⭐⭐ - She's fine, I guess
  • Eito - ⭐⭐ - Kind of flat to me tbh
  • Tsubasa - ⭐⭐⭐ - She's fine
  • Gaku - ⭐⭐ - More annoying than charming
  • Ima - ⭐⭐⭐ - He's alright
  • Kako - ⭐⭐⭐ - She's alright
  • Shouma - ⭐⭐ - Has potential, but has so far generally been underutilized in the routes that I've played
  • Nozomi - ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - FAVE. Love her so much
  • Kurara - ⭐⭐⭐⭐ - Very fun
  • Kyoshika - ⭐⭐⭐ - Kind of one note, but she is pretty funny and I love her relationship with Kurara.
  • Yugamu - ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - LOVE him, he's great
  • Moko - ⭐ - Eh. One note and kind of annoying
  • Eva - ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - LOVE her, I wish we got to see more of her real personality
  • Sirei - ⭐⭐ - Don't like him as a person, as a character I find him kind of interesting but everyone else more so
  • Nigou - ⭐⭐⭐ - Started off thinking he was ugly af but now I've come around and think he's cute
  • V'ehxness - ⭐⭐⭐⭐ - Kind of a one note villain, but she's given enough complexity for me
  • Shion - ⭐⭐⭐ - He's alright

I think that mostly summarizes my thoughts? Oh, and ships. Here are my favorite ships.

No outright spoilers, just the ships themselves:
Favorite: Eva/Nozomi
Love: Takumi/V'ehxness, Takumi/Hiruko, Hiruko/Darumi, Darumi/Takumi/Tsubasa/Yugamu
Like: Nozomi/Takumi (as long as it's twisty and fucked up), Nozomi-G/Takumi, Ima/Kako, Kurara/Kyoshika, Kurara/Nozomi, Takemaru/Hiruko, Takumi/Yugamu
NOTPs: Gaku/any female character but especially Eva or Kurara
