I recently watched this video essay by Patrick Willems on YouTube about the 2008 movie Speed Racer, one of my favorite movies of all time. Apparently it's popular now? Or, well, as popular as a live action Speed Racer movie from 2008 will ever be lmao.

I don't always vibe with this guy's videos but I wholeheartedly agree that this movie was ahead of its time!! I rewatched it after watching this video and it's just as spectacular as I've been saying since I first saw it in 2008. It's such a fun movie with amazing visuals, the wild camerawork and unique cinematography really bring to life what you'd expect a live action cartoon to feel like. The racing sequences are sooo cool, and while there's undeniably some of the annoying antics found in a lot of kids' movies (*stares at Spritle and Chim-Chim*), I feel like this movie's got a lot of heart and earnestness and the emotional beats really hit.

To me it's got a really similar feeling to Pacific Rim, which I also adore. It's silly and larger than life and at its core it's about family and love--specifically in Speed Racer's case, love of art and being true to yourself and your vision despite the pressures of capitalism.

Anyway I guess this is me saying if you haven't seen Speed Racer, you should. (The only caveat is that it's very bright and flashy, so potentially problematic for those sensitive to flashing lights.) I'm probably preaching to the choir here because I'm sure Speed Racer is hyped in niche nerd spaces plenty and DW is definitely a niche nerd space lol, but I just love it a lot.

sonofgodzilla: "I did this to myself." (shiori)

“I will not entertain the notion for even a moment.” He scoffed, crossing his legs, folding his arms. “Counterfeit cards being trafficked on the Tonakailiner. What dross.”

I started writing a new book before I had even shared the last one with you. I had the feeling even before Rei had completed the cover for that first book that I was now unable to let go of this minor character who had appeared in two episodes of a Kamen Rider show in late 2023, and that now whatever I have imagined I had seen in her character had condemned us both to spending an eternity together. Through the early months of 2025, I spent my time imagining this train journey, trying to build not only on who I felt Harima Shiori was, but also who I thought her partner in the Investigations Department, Kugimiya Licht might be. I became obsessed with the idea of these two as a kind of awful Mulder and Scully, and I became fascinated with the idea that, through circumstance and poor execution, the episodes they share and the one summer movie in which Kugimiya appears sets up this scenario where both of these characters who are working together are antagonists on behalf of differing causes. It felt like Hitler and the Devil going out for dinner and neither of them realising the other was a bad guy also; it was stupid, I felt like I had to take it seriously.

Whilst writing the last book, I realised I had gone in a direction that presented the end results of a world in which evil is always the obvious outcome. In writing this one during the cold months of winter and the early spring, I realised I wanted to explore what steps you might need to take to reach that bad ending. In addition, I wanted to be a little defiant, I wanted you to know that I think Harima Shiori is the kind of character you can tell a broader array of stories about than her roughly fifteen minutes over two episodes give her credit for. I may have played my hand with this too early, having already shared two different stories in which I tried to push Kugimiya and Harima into their roles as awful Mulder and Scully, in which I tried to make the Investigations Department mean something more than their role as bad guys for two episodes before the franchise's traditional Christmas and New Year cliffhanger. Along the way, I was greatly inspired by not only Rei, but [personal profile] linky, [personal profile] luckyzukky, and [personal profile] likealighthouse also, all of whom I owe a great debt to that I can never repay. Likewise, Stewart, who is now possibly more experienced with shepherding me than he would like to be, really helped ensure this work made sense before finally being placed in your hands. When writing this, the Black Saturn community humoured me with more kindness and patience than I deserved as I spent a year posting allusions in one thread to every possible base instinct humanity is known to possess. As a companion piece, I also wrote the final story in our Kudo Mina cycle, this last part acting as a sort of epilogue to one specific thread found in this book.

I wanted to both show you that Shiori was more important than the two episodes she appeared in gave her room to prove, and I wanted to try and challenge myself to write a kind of story that was different from anything I had previously made. This book went through numerous titles before we settled on this. The final title is testament to my firm belief that everything you might possibly want to say sounds better when spoken in Spanish.

I wanted to write about the moments before the fall, the moments in which you are so convinced you are doing the right thing that you don't stop to think about what the outcome of those actions might be. I think that's at the heart of Shiori's character, I think that's what makes her so relatable. I want you to see her like I see her; I want you to listen to what she is telling you even though you know you can't trust her. Perhaps, in a way, I'm also asking you to extend this courtesy to me.

The weekend has flown by, yet again. Mother is more worried about the hematoma that I acquired beneath my upper arm than I am. It's a long red bruise. I have ice on it. Read up on hematomas - and apparently they are only an issue if you feel dizzy, faint, run a fever, have tingling in the digits, have one near the brain or abdomen. Arms, shoulders and legs, not so much. And it takes 1-4 weeks for them to heal. If somewhat lumpy, sore, and colorful - normal.

It's fine. I have ice on it at the moment - finally figured out how to do it. Also been told via mother's cousin - that heat helps.

I've been using a CALM APP to calm my nerves and help with the negative emotions. It helps. Best app that I've found to date, and cheaper than Headspace.

Television

* The Pitt S2 is up on HBO, and it's still good. It's one shift, hour by hour for July 4th, Doctor Robie's last shift before he goes on sabbatical, and the first shift for two doctor's who were away on sabbatical. The series is a hyper-realistic medical procedure that takes place entirely in the ER of an American inner city hospital in Pittsburgh, otherwise known as The Pitt. It's by far the most realistic medical drama that I've seen. The only other one that comes close is the UK series This is Gonna Hurt - starring Ben Whinslaw, and I found difficult to watch. The Pitt isn't quite as raw, nor as bloody as This is Gonna Hurt (which is about an London NHS obstetrics unit). If you want to watch the latter series - it's on Netflix, and was done by AMC and I think ITV. Netflix by the way - has the worst interface on streaming. It's close to impossible to rewind or fast forward, stop or pause on Netflix. I really hate Netflix's interface - it's always crashing my wifi on my television set. If it didn't have great programming, I'd ditch it.

I'm stretching this one out. It stars Noah Wyle, and the daughters of Brad Douriff (horror king), and Bryan Cranston, in supporting roles. Basically ER for grownups.

* Bridgerton S4 Part I - this is Benedict Bridgerton's book, and it has issues. The set up is pretty much the Cinderella trope - a popular and (ahem) overdone (IMO) trope. I am admittedly biased against it. I didn't like the original Cinderella. And the only version that kind of works for me is the one with Drew Barrymore or Sondheim's Into the Woods. (My favorite fairy tale trope is the original Snow Queen - I like it when the woman saves the guy, not the other way around). This is also a highly controversial book among romance readers - Read more... )

But Bridgerton is a bit of a satire, as are Julie Quinn's novels - they are making fun of the snobby British Class System.

I've got more to say, but alas time has jumped away from me and I must mosey on to bed.

Tomorrow will be a long and cold day - with work and PT afterwards.

Zhao Yunlan sprawled on a couch, grinning at his phone. The background shows a purple sky with stars. Text reads, "Slo-Mo Rewatch. Guardian - half an episode per week @ sid_guardian.dreamwidth.org"

Hi, welcome to this week's instalment of the Guardian drama Slo-Mo Rewatch! Watch half an episode a week, and then come and chat about it here in comments. Or you can just jump into the comments without rewatching, of course!

Here is last week's half-episode. On to the second half!

Episode 10, from 22:09:

Summary: Zhao Yunlan and the Envoy run into some Youchu, whom the Envoy fights. He can't find the way to Wang Zheng with black energy, though, so Zhao Yunlan brings out the Sundial. The Envoy chides him about the danger, and Zhao Yunlan is reminded of a friend of his. :D The Sundial leads them to Wang Zheng, who is now bound to Sang Zan's pillar, and she tells her story: as Ge Lan, she was the daughter of the Hanga tribe's patriarch, and Sang Zan was a slave. They fell in love even though Ge Lan's father and brother were responsible for the death of Sang Zan's brother and sister. During a slave rebellion, Sang Zan killed Ge Lan's father in front of her and becomes the new patriarch. He kept protecting her even though the tribe hated her as the daughter of the old patriarch. Ultimately they decided to execute her in front of him. He tried to revive her with the Mountain-River Awl, but it doesn't have that kind of power. And from that day on, Sang Zan changed. Zhao Yunlan, without having heard the details, 100% understands the hatred Sang Zan must have felt - and so does the Envoy.

Zhao Yunlan in the Hanga caves, reacting to the Envoy fighting

Quote:

Revolutionary Sang Zan:

"Anyone who's been tribe leader for so many years is no longer a human being. He is a symbol of authority. Why does only one person have authority over the entire Hanga tribe? Everyone has the right to make decisions for themselves."

Detail:

When the Envoy can't trace Wang Zheng with black energy because the cave labyrinth is protected by a Hallow, Zhao Yunlan complains: " Weren't the Hallows created to defend against Dixingren? And now they're a stumbling block for us."

He's apparently forgotten that one of "us" - the very person trying to search with black energy! - is also Dixingren!

Questions: What's your favourite part of this half-episode? Do you like the Ge Lan/Sang Zan flashback show? Any thoughts about this in comparison to the novel? How did Sang Zan develop his revolutionary ideas? If they'd run away together like they wanted, do you think they'd have been happy together long-term? What's going through Zhao Yunlan's head when he watches the Envoy fight Youchu, and then claps? When Zhao Yunlan says, "You sound exactly like a friend of mine," how many feelings does Shen Wei have about being compared to himself? When Shen Wei explains how the Awl can strip away an energy body, how does he know about this? Do you sympathise with Sang Zan's hatred, like Zhao Yunlan and Shen Wei do? Why do you think Shen Wei is so emphatic about it? How much is Zhao Yunlan's view of the Envoy changing through all of this?

(These are all just conversation starters - feel free to answer all, some, or none, and to say as much or as little as you like! You don't have to be keeping up with the rewatch to join in!)

Here is our schedule for the next batch of episodes - please do sign up to host a post if you can!
